This video shows the process from start to finish of how to remove tongue and groove boards from a floor without damaging any adjacent boards, prepare the area for new flooring, and install the new flooring.
The flooring in this room is 3/4" thick by 2" wide, and is a type of redwood that we believe to be Douglas Fir, Heart Pine, or something similar. We do know that the wood is from 1915, and the house across the street was the previous home to the general manager of Bethlehem Steel for some period of time. The flooring was not nailed to any subfloor, but instead nailed directly to the floor joists. This is obvious because all of the seams in the flooring are in 16" increments, as opposed to random lengths that most other floors installed over a subfloor would have. The holes in the floor that the customer wanted replaced are from old cast iron hot water radiators that had been previously removed. Since flooring like this is not available in these dimensions, we simply took some cedar 1x6 that had the desired redness and ripped it into 2" widths and cut it to length for this particular application. After the floor was sanded and finished, the repairs were barely noticeable, which was the ultimate goal.
Also noteworthy: This video has been sped up to 1.25x its original speed for time and instructional consideration, so everything was actually done 25% slower in real life, like cutting, measuring, safety, etc.
