So, you're thinking about buying hardwood flooring. Good move. Wood floors will give your home a classic and tasteful look. Before you sign the dotted line, allow me to give you five important tips on how to get the most out of your hardwood flooring.
Hi, my name is Tony Oliva, owner of Unique Flooring in Oceanside, California. We give these same five tips to our customers so that they can make the best hardwood flooring purchase decision possible.
Tip One: Be Aware of Moisture
Liquids and hardwood flooring do not mix. If you are putting down hardwood in a room where spills might occur, such as the kitchen, put down mats or rugs near the sink or where people will most likely be holding drinks (like at the kitchen table or near the couch).
Tip Two: Consider Where You Live
Hardwood floors don't do well in humid or moist environments. This is especially important to our customers, since Oceanside is a beach community. If you live in a moist or humid environment, we strongly recommend that you consider buying engineered hardwood, which can withstand moisture a lot better than traditional hardwood floors.
Tip Three: Prevent Scratches
Hardwood flooring is susceptible to scratching. I recommend putting felt pads or rubber casters on the legs of heavy furniture and never push heavy objects across a wood floor (use a dolly or air sled instead). Additionally, put mats by every entrance to pick up pebbles and gravel that can travel in on shoes.
Speaking of shoes, ask guests and family to take their shoes off before walking on the hardwood floor, especially women wearing heels. Another big cause of scratches are pets and children. If you do have pets and young children, it might be a good idea to buy one or two boxes of extra planks just in case you ever need to replace damaged parts of your floor.
Tip Four: Keep Out of the Sun
Just like direct sun can burn and hurt skin, UV rays can also discolor wood flooring. We recommend installing UV coated windows to protect your floors, and rearranging furniture and rugs regularly to spread out sun exposure.
Tip Five: Buy Local
If you live in a town of good size, you probably have multiple flooring retail stores to choose from, including the big guys. I happen to think using a local, family-owned store is the way to go. For example, at Unique Flooring our only focus is flooring. All of our employees are extremely knowledgeable and dedicated to helping our customers through every step of the flooring process, from the planning phase all the way through to installation and final inspection. We're small enough that our customers usually become our friends and refer us to their connections. This makes us want to do our very best on every job. I don't think most big box retailors feel this way.
I hope these five tips to getting the most out of your hardwood floor have been helpful.
At Unique Flooring our job is to put the perfect floor under your feet. Thanks for watching!
