While U.S. production has diminished, asbestos-bearing ores are found worldwide and countries such as Canada and Brazil remain major manufacturers and exporters of asbestos products. . Floor tiles installed prior to 1980 must be presumed to contain asbestos unless they have been analyzed by microscopic analysis and found to be non-asbestos. Note that it is possible that tiles installed after 1980 that were imported may contain asbestos. It is prudent industrial hygiene practice to ensure that replacement tiles are non-asbestos. Generally, tile currently manufactured in the United States will not contain asbestos. Products such as vinyl asbestos floor tile (VAT), roofing shingles and transite exterior siding can still be lawfully installed in new or existing buildings. Kentile Floors Inc. was a popular tile and flooring manufacturer headquartered in Brooklyn, New York. The company commonly used asbestos in its production of floor tiles and other products. It was not until the regulation of asbestos in 1977 that the dangers of asbestos became well known, and Kentile Floors Company joined the ranks of thousands of manufacturers and suppliers held responsible for distribution of asbestos-containing products. In the 1980s, asbestos was identified as a hazardous substance and most companies discontinued the use of the material. The Environmental Protection Agency came to classify asbestos as a known human carcinogen and the agency issued regulations concerning the production and manufacturing of some asbestos-containing products in order to limit asbestos exposure. Kentile products were primarily used in residential homes, and the following individuals may have been exposed to asbestos: homeowners, cworkers, tile installers, tile repairmen and Kentile plant manufacturers. Cases of sickness and death related to the flooring materials produced by Kentile began to surface, and the company was hit with a large number of personal injury lawsuit claims. By 1992 the company had declared bankruptcy and eventually closed permanently. Their landmark sign still stands in Brooklyn.
