Use wood or plastic spacers during installation to maintain this 3/8’’ expansion space.Kitchen wall units part 2.
Part two of how to reinforce an internal non-load bearing wall to enable heavy wall units to be fitted.
In this example it was two glass fronted kitchen wall units 17 kilos empty weight each. The wall is of a standard quickwall construction used in houses in the UK. It consists of pressed thin gauge steel C Section vertical uprights with standard plasterboard glued and screwed to the uprights. Similar to timber drywall construction. Only problem is standard plasterboard isn't strong enough to take heavy loads even when using expanding plasterboard fixings. Plasterboard is a composite material made of layers of paper with a gypsum core. Most of the strength is in the paper layer. If this paper gets damaged, damp etc it can weaken the panel. This is why I have added exterior grade plywood to which the wall units are attached to. Some kitchen units come with wall fixings but this Wickes 'Houston' unit didn't. Once the plywood is fixed securely to the vertical supports it is then a case of using expanding fixture bolts to fix the units to the wall. All holes and access into the internal wall was hidden by the wall units. Being internal there was no insulation to worry about but carefull planning was needed to avoid power cables and central heating pipes.
See part one first for details.
